THE grieving parents of a 12-year-old schoolboy who died in a road accident have described him as
being as "close to perfect as anyone could be".
Steve Millington died at Southampton General Hospital of serious head injuries on Thursday, January
4 - two days after he and a friend were involved in a collision with a car while cycling in Pack
Lane, Basingstoke. The accident happened at 3.20pm as the two boys were cycling towards Oakley.
Steve's devastated parents, Paul and Anne, both aged 47, of Alexandra Road, Brookvale, Basingstoke,
said their son was a popular and well-loved boy who was full of mischief, love and generosity.
Paying tribute to him, the couple said: "In life, Steve would give anything that he possessed to any
of his friends or family just because he thought that it would make them happy.
"If Steve thought that you were upset in any way, he would come and put his arms around you and give
you a little cuddle to make it better - and it normally would.
"We are grateful that Steve was able to pack an awful lot into his short life. He had been to
Disneyland twice and enjoyed other holidays to France and Spain."
One of his greatest loves was fishing. We enjoyed two trips to France in the last year and, on the
second trip, Steve caught two carp of 31lb and 39lb, which he was immensely proud of.
"There are many enduring memories of his adventures and scrapes, along with his incredible acts of
kindness and generosity.
"We know that no one is perfect, but Steve came as close to perfect as anyone could be.
"There is now a hole in our lives and in our hearts that can never be filled."
To add to the family's anguish, Steve's pet dog Sam had to be put to sleep the day after he died.
Mrs Millington said that although Sam had been ill for a long time, following two major strokes in
December 2005, he refused to eat or move from the corner of the room from the moment of Steve's
accident.
She added: "He had lost control of all his functions and would not even take a drink of water.
"In life he was Steve's dog - now they are reunited."
The heartbroken parents praised the medical and emergency staff who had tried to save Steve's life,
and also an unknown woman who was first on the scene following the accident.
They have given permission for Steve's organs to be donated to help save the lives of others.
Steve attended Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College, in Wessex Way, Basingstoke, along with
his 15-year-old brother Lee.
Headteacher Betty Elkins described Steve as a bright, capable and popular pupil, who was known for
his sense of humour.
She said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
"He will be greatly missed by both staff and students alike."
Steve's 11-year-old friend Dale Butler, who was with him at the time of the accident, was taken to
hospital for a check-up but was not seriously injured.
Dale, of South Ham, was Steve's best friend and, in a message of tribute to him, he said: "I will
always remember the laugh we had and I will never forget you, your best mate Dale."
A 17-year-old girl, who was driving the red Vauxhall Corsa involved in the collision, has been
arrested on suspicion of careless driving without due care and attention and causing grievous bodily
harm without intent.
She has been bailed until March 5, pending further police inquiries.
Hi Steven. You sound like you were a very special boy and I hope your parents treasurer every moment they had with you and remember all the good times they had with yourself.
My heart goes out to your Mum. I have only known her only a few months but she is a great source of comfort and an inspiration to us all.
God bless you and say hi to Matt for me. Hope you are having fun up their and not getting up to much mischief with those angels!
Steve,
Thank you for looking after my beautiful boy Keelan, I know he's safe with you.
Whenever me and you lovely mum talk about you, I feel like I've known you for years. Your not just another Angel taken from us tragically, your a special boy and friend. Knowing your mum, has made me a better person and sharing a loss as great as hers is a comfort knowing I'm no longer alone.
I'm sorry for all the times I've sat by your grave and cried, it's easier to talk to you and feel the emptiness Keelan left behind him. I know I have a connection with you, not only through your mum but through the other side. I remember the message you sent that weekend in my cards. Makes me smile knowing you let me pass your words on to your family.
I'm sorry we had to meet this way but I know I'll always be around to help your mum in any way I can. I may only be a 'child' myself but I feel I'm older than my years.
Take care in that playground in the sky and keep the Angel babies safe. Wrap up warm, and don't cause too much mischief. Send your mum a big hug, don't forget your dad or Lee.
Lots of love,
Charlene xx
STEVEN PAUL MILLINGTON 30.12.94 - 04.01.07
Two years ago today our lives were shattered and our hearts were broken. In ever loving memory of a beautiful, dear Son and Brother, so tragically taken away from us in a road traffic collision, aged just 12 years.
The golden gates were opened and an angel softly said, 'take my hand young Stevie and rise up from your bed'.
'Come with me to heaven where children laugh and sing, free from pain and suffering, free from earthly sin'.
We know that we will meet again, but until the day we do, we feel privileged for the 12 short years we loved and cherished you.
Waiting for the day when we are reunited.
Our endless love, we miss you so, Mum, Dad and Lee (from Chant x) xxx
Poem for stevie
You are missed forever by your brother
And of course your father and mother.
There is not one day that’s passes they don’t think why
But now you watch them lovingly as you fly by.
People talk about you all the time
If only you could let them know that everything is just fine.
This time of year will always be hard
As you are no longer here to sign that Christmas card.
Of course it would have been your birthday
It’s not forgotten although your away.
Now you are with Sam in a better place
It must be nice to have that familiar face.
Your mum talks about you full of love and adore
I know she wishes that she could have more.
It may have been too early for you to depart
But you will always remain in her heart.
Friends and family think of you everyday
Please don’t think these feelings will go away.
I know they wish just to hear you talking
Or even just to see you walking.
In bad times its not so easy to see
That you are right there looking down with glee.
Memories of you they will always treasure
Oh to many to measure.
You were such a special boy
So young and full of joy.
Now you start again with Sam your old friend
Just remember for Stevie Millington this is not the end !!
Happy New Year.

sending love to your angel and your loved ones.
Happy Birthday.
Hi again SweetHeart.
Auntie Sarah and I went and bought your balloons today. They were filled with love and hugs from the whole family. Two sit at your brightly lit resting place whilst, the other had a special message on it.
It was a very dull and cloudy day, but that was exactly as my mood was. We released the magnificent red heart to float to heaven, and watched as it begun to disappear into the far distance. The tears begun to roll down our faces knowing that we would never see your beautiful face again. Then suddenly the clouds parted and the sun shone through so brightly that we had to look away.
Auntie Sarah said ' Steve's just received his balloon,'as if you were saying Thanks.
Have a great day with all your Angel friends, we all miss you so much.
Lots and lots of love Mum xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
